MY STORY
Jeff Phipps
Since I was a kid, I was always interested in making things, particularly out of wood. I thank my parents for not taking a jack-knife out of my hands at 8 years old and allowing me to use a radial arm saw at the age of 10. Since then I have been carving and building numerous projects and usually have 4 or 5 carvings on the go. They say I come by it honestly. My mother could paint and draw. Her ancestors designed and built boats in Nova Scotia and my uncle is a well-regarded carver.
I welcome you to peruse my web-site and ask me anything about anything. Just ask if you don’t see something I might be able to make you. Oh, and the Newf you see in the picture, was Bosun. Where ever I made wood chips or sawdust, he would strategically lay down.
ARTIST VS. ARTISAN VS. CRAFTSMEN
My first duck decoy was a wedding present to my wife, 20+ years ago. My second was a life-sized Common Loon that won Best in Class at a regional art and carving show. It was the first and only competition I entered. I figured I should go out on top.
My mother-in-law is a mixed media “Artist” who generally paints. When I was carving at her place by the lake she pointed out to me that I was an “Artisan” not an artist. You may have noticed that I did not put a label on my self. I simply create something I like and hope others will too.
