Also known as “Killer Whales”, these toothed whales are at the top of the food chain. I make these in Spruce or Pine when they are to be painted but have also made them from Cedar with stain allowing the natural grain to dominate. 

 

Please note Orcas have tremendous diversity in their shapes and sizes, especially the dorsal fin. In the wild, some males have dorsal fins that are 6 feet high, while females can be half of that and are often curved towards the tail. I often represent this diversity in my carvings. This black and white example of a male is 35” long and 18.5” high, painted in acrylics. I am currently working on a 40” example in Cedar.
